A Word from NLFF Founder/Director, Ramon G. Nazario
Welcome to the first annual Official Newark Latino Film Festival. Thank you for being here.
Early last year, I realized that there is not a film festival for the diverse Hispanic and Latino community here in Newark, NJ. As a Newark-born, lifelong resident, whose mother took me home to Puerto Rico every summer, I am passionate about my city, and my culture. As a filmmaker, I'm passionate about my art. My dream of launching the first Newark Latino Film Festival is coming true.
The Newark Latino Film Festival opened submissions on July 7, 2018. The festival itself officially opens October 6, 2018 (during the Newark Arts fest weekend), and closes October 27th. The award winning films, created by Latino and Hispanic filmmakers, and student filmmakers, will be shown at several venues throughout Newark. Classic Latino and Hispanic films will also be shown for seniors to enjoy. This is truly a people's festival.
The overall concept of this festival is healing through unification. With the ongoing crisis that have impacted our community, it is important for us to stand united - "Unidos." This film festival will not only have panel discussions about the art of filmmaking from a Latino perspective. It will also include a much needed discussion about the prejudices that exist within our own community.
The positive feedback and anticipation have been tremendous. People have waited for someone to create this kind of festival in Newark. The time is now.
May we continue to heal as a people. May the art of film be an inspirational tool to help us find our cultural voices. Look forward to seeing you there.
